The Most Useless Phrase in Social Media

Want to know the dumbest thing companies do in their social media marketing?

It’s a common mistake, one made by the largest of brands with the deepest of pockets.

What is this mistake?

Using a dirty little phrase marketers think sounds hip and cool…one they hope will result in tons of social media followers.

And what is this less-than-effective phrase? You’ve seen it…. “Like us on Facebook” or its cousin, “Follow us on Twitter.”

Now what’s wrong with these seemingly innocent combinations of words?

Let me answer that through a little scenario. Imagine going a party, walking up to everyone you meet and saying, “Like me.” How well do you think that would work in gaining you friends?

Most people would look at you like you were nuts. Others would ask a logical question, “Why should I like you?”

And that’s the point of this post.

If you give your audiences reasons to follow you on Facebook or Twitter, odds are you’ll gain more followers.  Simply asking them to follow you without a reason why they should follow you doesn’t cut the mustard.

In life, people become your friend once they have reasons to do so. A simple request doesn’t hold weight.

Online, more people will follow you if you give them reasons to follow you. So instead of asking them to like you, tell them why they should like you.

How do you do this?

Offer “Fans only specials.” People follow companies via social media for special deals and “insider” information. So it only makes sense to offer special offers, deals, and information available only to your followers on social media channels.

By doing specials, you give reasons for people to pay attention to you. Give people reasons to pay attention and you’ll find you’ll have a larger following and you’ll make more sales.
